Student Leadership
An integral part of CBF’s Clean Water Blueprint effort, the Student
Leadership program is entering its third year. How it has blossomed.
In early November, 17 high school students from around the region
gathered at CBF’s remote Karen Noonan Center near Crocheron,
Maryland, for two days. Under the watchful guidance of CBF’s
Student Leadership Coordinators Jeff Rogge and Lane Whigham,
these students put their heads together to map out a one-day winter conference for February. The organizing students are hoping to
attract as many as 125 aspiring student leaders, mostly high school
students, from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the District of
Columbia. The purpose of the conference will be to inspire action
for clean water.
These 17 students know action. The second morning of their meeting, they traveled to a farm in nearby Cambridge, Maryland, and
joined around 75 other volunteers to plant 800 sapling trees and
build a four-acre streamside buffer to prevent agricultural runoff
from fouling a tributary of the Bay.
For those observing or working shoulder to shoulder with these
extraordinary young people, one indeed feels “Fresh Hope.”
As 2015 draws to a close, there is much to celebrate. In CBF’s annual report, which can be found online at cbf.org/annualreport, we celebrate “Fresh Hope and Renewed Strength.” We told sto- ries about remarkable high-school student activists in Maryland
who want “to do more;” local organizations in Virginia partnering with
CBF to oppose a mega development in a pristine eagle habitat; an Oregon
law clinic whose members reached out to help us successfully stand up
to the American Farm Bureau Group’s appellate effort to derail the
Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint; and a Pennsylvania farmer who
worked with CBF staff to install conservation practices on his farm, thus
restoring his part of the West Branch of Antietam Creek. And, we
thanked members and donors like you who make our work possible,
share our vision of a saved Bay and healthy rivers and streams, and
helped bring us a little closer today than it was a year ago.

Campaigns
