Coming face-to-face with a mysterious underwa- ter creature she’d never seen before could turn ugly quickly, and Jessica King knew it. In fact, she welcomed it. What she didn’t know is that
the experience would help change her life.
Lots of teenagers enjoy snorkeling. This young woman
from Juniata High School was geared-up and, with other
students, turning over mammoth-size rocks and plunging
repeatedly into a northern Pennsylvania stream hoping to
catch the reclusive and elusive Eastern hellbender.
King’s work with Dr. Peter Petokas that day back in
2006 was part of the 30-day river odyssey “Expedition
Susquehanna,” which CBF conducted to teach 11 high
school students from across Pennsylvania’s watershed about
the clean-water challenges that the Commonwealth faces.
