This success earned high honors from
Outdoor magazine in 2012, when the editors named Richmond America’s Best River
Town. I’m sure that Ancarrow, who passed
away in 1991, would have been proud.
To see for myself, I spent a beautiful
November afternoon on Ancarrow’s river with
three coworkers from CBF’s Richmond office:
Communications Coordinator Kenny
Fletcher, Outreach and Advocacy Manager
Ann Jurczyk, and Staff Scientist Joe Wood.
Following the commands of Ben Moore,
We had just put in on the southside, east of
the Boulevard Bridge after a winding drive
along Reedy Creek. Tailing us in a kayak was
Riverside’s Dave Fary. The riffles here were
gentle and gave us a chance to take in the
sites and Ben’s vast knowledge of the river.
We were a boat full of guilt, discussing our
fortunate assignment. When we checked
in, the chalkboard at Riverside Outfitters
read, “Water Level 3. 9, Water 65°, Air 65°,
Enjoy the James!” Mission accomplished.
Richmond is one of only two places in the
country where you can ride Class III and
IV rapids in an urban setting. The intensity
of the rapids increased as we progressed,
cutting through the Richmond skyline, but
with the water level fairly low that day, we
were all within our comfort levels. Before
one of our last falls, we pulled our boats up
on a large rock for a quick drink of water
and some trail mix.
