A Perfect Poster Fish
for the Blueprint
They need our help,” explains Doug Myers, CBF Maryland Senior Scientist and in-house stur- geon expert. “Sturgeon have had a lot happen to
their habitat over the years. Today, the Chesapeake’s
only confirmed breeding population is in Virginia’s
James River. We need to expand their reach so if something disastrous were to happen on the James, the fish
wouldn’t be wiped out.”
A lot has happened, too, since we featured sturgeon
in the Summer 2011 issue of Save the Bay magazine.
The year after our article ran, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration Fisheries listed Atlantic
sturgeon as endangered.
