With the 2012 Presidential election behind us, it is an
appropriate time to look back—and to look forward.
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (page 17) was published
50 years ago. She is credited with the birth of the grassroots environmental movement, the creation of the
Environmental Protection Agency, and the banning of
some dangerous pesticides from our ecosystem. How
can we make our own legacy of change?
The Clean Water Act was made law 40 years ago (page
10), yet we haven’t acheived the promise of fishable,
swimable water. We must defend and implement the
Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint to finish the job in
